IMG_9639.JPG Modified: 5/11/13, 9:52 AM Here is a 15 7/8" side I cut out of soft maple. The board was reasonably straight when I started. Note how the internal tension caused the board to bow.

IMG_9640.JPG Modified: 5/11/13, 9:52 AM It bowed over 1/4" in the 15 7/8" length. Too much to try to salvage.

IMG_0601.JPG Modified: 6/25/13, 1:08 PM The stack of frames sat in the garage for over a month before I got back to the finishing stage. Cherry did what cherry does when it gets exposed to sunlight....it got a tan. So, I had to sand them all again with 220 paper to get a consistent color and get rid of the tan lines :-|
Here is the color of the frames after applying one coat of a 3:1 mix of boiled linseed oil and turpentine. The frames are placed on an unfinished cherry cut-off to show the way the BLO popped the grain and added color depth.

IMG_0602.JPG Modified: 6/25/13, 1:08 PM The next step is to spray a couple of coats of Zinsser Spray Shellac. I'll give a very light sanding with a 320 grit sponge between coats. After the final coat cures, I'll buff with 0000 steel wool to knock down the sheen, then add a coat of Johnson's Paste Wax.
